Duck Eggs

I am so impressed with how the ducks are handling the winter weather, as we are still getting eggs! They must know they have fans out there. If you’d like to help support my flock of tilling, bug eating, fertilizer-producing ducks, contact me for egg availability. 1 half dozen eggs are $4, and there is a 25 cent discount for returning your carton for another order.

If you need some duck egg information or inspiration for their uses in the kitchen, I’ll refer you to Carol Deppe, who inspired many young farmers to give ducks a try. My eggs receive minimal fanfare: out of the cast iron and onto buttered toast, but newcomers might find it best to cook them into something familiar to get a feel for the taste and texture differences. There aren’t many, but I respect that some folks have very sensitive taste buds, and might be inclined to swear off duck eggs all together if the taste is exceptionally strong on it’s own. Leave a comment if you like them, the encouragement is good for others!

I love duck eggs! So much more rich and flavorful than chicken eggs. Yep! Like them just the way you do- out of the skillet with some nice buttered toast to dip. Hot cup of coffee. Yummy!

We’ve had ducks for 20 years but have had trouble lately finding new ducklings for sale. Our current flock of 4 hens (and 1 drake) is not laying anymore (haven’t for 6 mos.) and we did not successfully breed new ducklings. Does anyone know where we might purchase sexed ducklings that are of a layer breed?

Hi Rick, and thanks for your comment. I don’t personally have a good source for duck breeders that sell sexed ducklings. I have had good success getting mature ducks from Craigslist, from folks who are moving or end up with more females than they need. Best of luck!
